This is "kind-of" fixed in 2.1.1-17 which I just uploaded. Meaning that you can now specify any number of rows (>=1), and any number of columns as long as it is at least 12. The reason for this limitation is that for smaller numbers of columns the layout of the graphical window is messed up, and I was not motivated enough to hack the way how that layout is calculated.
