This was apparently due to some sort of weird configuration problem -- I was seting index_format, and when I commented that out, the problem went away. Here's the weird part: I fixed it by going through and replacing each space character in index_format with a space character. I suppose I must have somehow accidentally gotten a character in there that displayed properly in some places (i.e., vim), but caused horrible display corruption in mutt. I've attached the relevant portion of the "bad" muttrc as evidence; IMO it would be preferable if mutt failed a bit more gracefully when invalid characters were present in index_format. Daniel
