Yes, that could be the cause. But Debian provides only these dictionaries, I mean from edict. I also installed enamdict as gjiten suggests it and it contains some Japanese words but they aren't common words just proper names; place-names, surnames and so on. Kanjidic shows no kanjis when I select this dictionary as the source. I guess those dictionaries from edict package should be converted to UTF-8 then but I don't know if this will break something. Without dictionaries gjiten and kanjidic are useless anyway.
