It doesn't open an X window. It complains about:

Now I seem to have SDL installed. However, searching through the kvm
documentation to find information about SDL is almost as hard as searching
through the SDL documentation...
*sigh*
Run xterm without qemu-kvm and get it to work. First.
Next qemu-kvm will work too.

I can sympathize with your frustration. :)
xterm runs fine. I can type in xterm from konsole and it launches as
expected when I run it as a normal user. When I run it as root however,
I get:
Warning: This program is an suid-root program or is being run by the
root user.
The full text of the error or warning message cannot be safely formatted
in this environment. You may get a more descriptive message by running the
program as a non-root user or by removing the suid bit on the executable.
xterm: Xt error: Can't open display: %s
Conversely, when I run kvm as a normal user (who is in the kvm group), I
got an access denied error. It seems that the new image was only rw for
root. I fixed this with chown libvirt-qemu:kvm. This allowed me to
continue the setup. However it seemed to be hanging in the same spot so
I've created a new image and restarted the process.
It's getting further this time...
