I can reproduce at least part of this bug.
jed in fairly bare debootstrapped unstable chroot gives me:

jed itself does start, but only in some horrible mode (brief?) that I
don't know how to drive. (^Ke to get out).
however if I install libslang2 2.2.4-13 on my laptop it still works OK.
both of these are AMD64 machines.
I will try to work out what the difference is that makes this bug
reproducible.

where the build of some other package looks like it is failing for
essentially the same reasons:
