I ran into this problem too. It was frustrating and confusing when I got 
the error message 'Bad device-uri scheme "socket"' because the 
documentation clearly says that "socket" is a valid scheme. It was 
finding this bug report that got me printing.

Before issuing that error message, CUPS should check against a list of 
common schemes and give a message about enabling the scheme if the 
scheme is on the list. The list should included any that appear in the 
CUPS documentation.
