This could also be related to running in a window versus full screen.
Can you please try running a minimal X session, for instance by
starting X with "xinit", and there run
"/usr/lib/xscreensaver/gleidoscope -root", this should run it over the
full background.

No worries. You did a very logic choice. The most important is that
you get the bug filed :) We can shuffle the bug around afterwards.

Can you please install xserver-xorg-core-dbg, then reproduce the
crash, and attach Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old, whichever has a
backtrace (stack trace) in it?
