It appears that this bug is caused by the linux kernel packages. When I recompiled the 2.6.12-10 package against the current gcc 4.0.2, performance returned to what I expected from my computer.
Using PlanetPenguin Racer(?? right name?) as an example. With the 2.6.12-1-686 kernel, I was getting between 45-50 fps. After recompiling the kernel ( with the exact same options, i copied the .config over to the source just to be sure ), it went up to 60-65 fps. XMAME now runs perfectly again ( before, some games had the crackling sound problem ). Please note that my video driver ( nvidia 1.0.7174 ) was compiled against the same gcc as above, for both the unstable kernel and my recompiled one. On a somewhat related note, don't use a preemptible kernel, as it diminish game performance as well. To make a long story short, the next kernel upload into debian should solve this problem, provided it is compiled with the current gcc. I will forward this bug to the kernel maintainers later, so they are made aware of it. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
