After removing the content of ~/.cache/background, the displayed background at the next login is a uniform blue. I thought ~/.cache was a cache directory, containing only automaticaly generated files. So I was hoping gnome could be able to regenerate my background from the original file I pointed as my background image (still accessible under the same name). It might be important to note the original file is a jpeg.
