Hoorah! Thanks for your work. I've privately backported this package so aforementioned coworkers can try it out on squeeze and perhaps send some bug reports your way. The only changes needed were to demultiarchify it and to use "dpkg-buildflags --get" directly instead of "dpkg-buildflags --export=configure" since the latter is not supported in squeeze.
