I apt-get source curl, which gives me 7.14.0-5.  I don't use the
Debian way of compiling, just ./configure --host=...

Here's the context:
  checking if we need -mimpure-text... no
  checking if we need BUILDING_LIBCURL... yes
  ./configure: line 20794: ?: command not found
  checking if we need CURL_STATICLIB... checking whether make sets
  $(MAKE)... (cached) yes
  checking whether to support http... yes
  checking whether to support ftp... yes

Previously, I think '|' was an unprintable character..
