If one can live with piuparts error reports and strange warnings during package installation, yes. I have arranged myself with that. Eleven years after this bug was initially filed, I think that this feature should be implemented not in debhelper, but in dpkg-maintscript-helper, which has taken the responsibility of implementing common maintscript actions in the mean time.
