I tried the 1.2.7+1.2.8cvs20051007-5 release you verified as working, only to discover it no longer does. I recompiled in a current sid chroot and it exhibits the same problems as the current version in unstable.
One thing: are you using binary drivers for an ATI or nVidia video card? If so, it may be due to that. I am using an nvidia Geforce4 MX440 here and everything works fine with 1.0.7174, but the minute I upgraded to the new 1.0.7676 drivers, sound stuttered wildly in XMAME and Mupen64 ( a good N64 emulator ) segfaults during video initialization. Until there is more proof this is an SDL bug, I am going to consider this a problem with the video driver you are using. Perhaps it doesn't properly support xorg yet?
