I believe this bug was reported by mistake. Usually I test for such case, specifically. Also as far as I'm aware Pierre is using git-buildpackage which is also quite sensitive to such situation. However because I wasn't able to reproduce the problem you described using 'debuild' and 'dpkg-buildpackage' there is a chance that something got wrong on your side or if we're using different architectures and 'make' is somehow broken on yours. (I'm on amd64) Would you be able to provide specific instructions how to reproduce? So far I'm not convinced if such problem exist.
