I've just observed this problem with cups-common (1.5.2-5) ... cups-client (1.5.2-5) ... cups-ppdc (1.5.2-5) ... libcupsfilters1 (1.0.2-1) ... cups-filters (1.0.2-1) ... cups (1.5.2-5) ... ... and a Start TSP442 connected to LPT1. Kernel is 2.6.32-3-686 (this is thin client with PXE boot and NFS root). I didn't change the kernel because I need usbfs etc. I've changed LPT port mode in BIOS from "bidirectional" to "ECP", but it made no difference.
