If by "we" you mean people using the "testing" branch of Debian, then 
yes, evidently that is at the moment needed.

But no, future users of the upcoming stable Debian release will either 
be provided with a fully working Sugar installation, or no Sugar!

If you - as a tester - succeed at building a working Hulahop I am quite 
interested in knowing more about it.  I have failed so far :-(

...but thanks to your poking here, I realize that the patch which Luke 
provided for this bugreport is not identical to the one he gave upstream 
at https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=728055 so I will now try 
mess some more with it...
