It came from the "numeric" names.  There's no particular reason--I'd
be happy with any other separator, though I thing ':' is better than
'_', since it's less likely to be used in an actual device name.

I really just wanted to use it in my schroot package ;-)  [I want to
lock LVM LVs during snapshot creation].  I would be happy to
co-maintain it, if you would find that helpful.
