I'm rather unclear what's going on here. In doc/changes.txt for 2.8.12.1 I see: | - Fix for missing menubar problem under some window managers where menu bar height is | reported as 0 when the menu hasn't fully realized yet. Now updates the height during | idle time if it is 0, otherwise no menu is shown. Looking at Ubuntu's appmenu.patch and appmenu2.patch, those changes are all present in the 2.8.12.1 upstream source, and in Ubuntu's latest packages (2.8.12.1-6ubuntu2) they have dropped those patches, so they seem to think this is now fixed upstream. I get menus with boincmgr with Gnome3, but I have given up trying to use Gnome3 shell, so maybe that's not very conclusive. If you can really reproduce this in with the latest wxwidgets packages from unstable, then I guess those patches aren't actually a full fix, or some other upstream change broke this.
