Stephen, are you sure this is a gnome-power-manager issue? Most likely this is triggered by the /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/95hdparm-apm hook (which is run by pm-powersave when switching between AC and battery) -- Why is it that all of the instruments seeking intelligent life in the universe are pointed away from Earth?
