I have made no tests but from what I've read in order to turn on the
UTF-8 mode on the console one has to compile the kernel with options
TEKEN_XTERM and TEKEN_UTF8. Doesn't this mean there are different
kernels for UTF-8 and for 8-bit encodings? Or maybe there some some
commands (ioctl?) or maybe terminal control sequences one can use to
turn on or off the UTF-8 mode on the console?
http://fxr.watson.org/fxr/source/dev/syscons/scterm-teken.c#L133
is the only non-declaration/non-definition use of teken_set_8bit(), so it
seems that a kernel recompile would be necessary, yes.
