In that case it must be some toolchain issue, not
something in qemu-kvm itsel...  Sigh, I wish I was
able to reproduce it locally... :(

Now, the fun task for me is to figure out which versions
of gcc/binutils/etc were used to build -8 version :)

And this basically means that a backported version of -9
should work fine, since it will use older and proven
toolchain.  Lemme try...
