currently Debian's fusecompress won't compress files with lzma. To this
effect, the changelog entry for version 2.6-2 contains the following note:
"Drop liblzma-dev from Build Dependency since upstream hasn't done a
new release with support for it. Will support lzma once upstream does."
I'm not sure, could it be that you possibly missunderstood upstream at
that time?
I've re-added the liblzma-dev dependency to the package, and lzma
works now.
If you don't mind, I'll do a NMU. The respective patch is attached.
On a related note: maybe it'd be a good idea to merge the Debian
fusecompress repository with upstream's. I think (I haven't checked in
detail though), that at least some of Debian's patches are included in
upstream's git repo.
