You may want to look at the DM program; the barrier to entry is lower (especially if you're already working with sponsors) and gives you the ability to update your own packages once the initial package sponsorship is done. I've gone ahead and moved this into wnpp as an RFA. I'm in the middle of migrating PGP keys and my new key is not yet in the debian-maintainers keyring, but once that settles down I'll get a sponsor to switch the maintainer to me.
