Package: perl Version: 5.14.2-9 The upstream ticket [perl #112382] and the resulting discussion at http://www.nntp.perl.org/group/perl.perl5.porters/2012/04/msg185435.html alerted me to the fact that perl5db.pl hardcodes xterm when starting a separate debugger instance for child processes.
