So it is slirp networking (-net user). There's a bug in this area indeed, which is a missing timer wakeup which can be mitigated by enabling SDL display or adding some activity. I'll see if it can be backported. Note the bug only affects slirp (user) networking, it does not happen with the recommended tap/bridge networking.
