Yes, I don't know why I missed that.  Sorry for the red herring.

I don't see any error in retrieving the Packages.gz file from approx's
point of view, so I don't understand what apt-get is complaining
about.

Can you also see if the same error occurs when using a different
mirror for that file?  And can you enable some more verbose output
from apt-get, like setting Debug::Acquire::http to true in apt.conf.
I'd like to understand why it's reporting "Err".
