Package: fai Version: 2.8.4 Running FAI from Debian Sarge on Alpha systems is entirely impossible as the disk paritioning part is broken. sfdisk can not be used on alpha, sdisklabel has to be used instead to write partitioning information bootable from within the srm.
Patches were proposed by Steffen Grunewald, which seem to do the partitioning part properly but they are not compatible with fai 2.8.4. Using his stuff /usr/share/fai/subroutines-linux together with /sbin/setup_harddisks does the hdd-setup part correctly but breaks later fai scripts. It would be suggested to introduce the stuff proposed in Steffens patches which are accessible at http://pandora.aei.mpg.de/~steffeng/fai/download into the general fai-tree. Additionally lacking are the fai-kernels where one can use the ones available from Steffen's page. They work at least on the 500au Workstation yet tried. Without introduction of the right partitioning method fai should be removed from debian stable's alpha-tree, as it is as such completely unusable. :( -- Kind regards, / War is Peace. | Freedom is Slavery.
