I met a related surprise after installing gtk2-engines-oxygen:
-- immediately after logging in, GTK apps showed up nicely with the
oxygen style;
-- but, after actually selecting oxygen-gtk as the GTK+ widget style (in
System Settings->GTK+ Appearance) and logging out / logging in, GTK apps
stopped using the oxygen style.

Creating symbolic links ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and ~/.gtkrc to ~/.gtkrc-2.0-kde,
as suggested in previous messages [re bug #631591], solved the above.
