I updated from testing shotwell (0.11.6-1) to unstable shotwell (0.11.6-2) but it "destroys" the event names: instead of, i.e., "Paris, Tour Eiffel" it shows only crap (wild Unicode characters) or nothing as event names. A downgrade to 0.11.6-1 solved the problem. (I guess the database format changed.)
