I'm not the original reporter, but I am getting the same behaviour, even with all the libsox-fmt-* packages at the same version as the other SoX packages.

I don't know what my default audio device is - I'm not aware of making any conscious decision - but it seems that SoX thinks it's PulseAudio. Setting the AUDIODRIVER environment variable to "pulseaudio" produces the same error message, while setting it to "alsa", "ao", "oss", or "ossdsp" all seem to work fine for me.

Installing the "pulseaudio" package makes the error message go away, though I'm not getting any sound; probably some configuration issue on my end. Since everything else works just fine without it, I'm hesitant to keep it installed.
