Bit fiddly but got there. Incidentally, contrary to the bug report, using rrdcached didn't totally work around the problem. It was a little faster which meant it sometimes worked. To fully work around the problem, I reduced the number of partitions diskstats was scanning by filtering out the LVM snapshots we use for backups. Thanks for your help and for packaging munin.
