Well not really an update, but: 1. I have decided to overcome the problem by installing a Adaptec PCI 19160 SCSI card. I have at the same time disabled the on-board AIC7880 controller. The 19160 has been promptly recognised and I can now install Sarge. 2. I can confirm that the AIC7880 is fully working (the on-board controller is normally recognised by a Red Hat 8 install, or by a Debian 3.0 r3 (Woody) using "linux" boot image on disc 2, and still now I can boot Red Hat 7 system using that controller. To me - not an expert - seems to be what it is called a Kernel regression, in other word recognition/compatibility of that component has been lost. 3. Will anybody (you?) look at this problem closely?
