Thanks for the really nice suggestion, but there are some reasons why i didn't implement it.
PAM is a very delicate subsystem and i am sure you can understand why.
Implementing a debconf configurator involves more problems than you think (to do it properly) and it introduces another, if not several, level of (possible) failure.
Login/auth business is really up to the sysadmin and even a single detail or error in a semi-automatic configurator can expose/compromise the box.
I am willing to review and accept (heavily tested) patches, but not to implement it from scratch.
