The error messages you posted could be a toolchain problem, but more 
likely the real error occurred higher up and you didn't post it.  Try 
redirecting the build stdout and stderr to a log file.

I was able to BFS on PPC but I used "dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot" with 
2.3.0.
