there are two meta commands for calling a (generic) web browser: /usr/bin/x-www-browser /usr/bin/www-browser I assume x-www-browser is meant for a web browser running in an X environment and www-browser is meant for running without X. As I'm not succeeding in running galeon on a text console ;-), the galeon package should not provide an entry for www-browser, not at all the one with the highest priority: $ update-alternatives --display www-browser www-browser - status is auto. link currently points to /usr/bin/galeon /usr/bin/galeon - priority 120 slave www-browser.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/galeon.1.gz /usr/bin/lynx - priority 50 slave www-browser.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/lynx.1.gz /usr/bin/links.main - priority 40 slave www-browser.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/links.main.1.gz /usr/bin/netrik - priority 10 slave www-browser.1.gz: /usr/share/man/man1/netrik.1.gz Current `best' version is /usr/bin/galeon.
