I had a somewhat curious problem since I installed KDE using sarge installer
just over a month ago. It could be related to this issue.

Konqueror won't save file associations when you right click on a file and
select open with... and use the tree menu to select the application you want
to use. It will only save the association if you type in the name of the
application manually. And the icon won't be the proper icon from the menu but
a blank paper icon, as if it doesn't know which app you are starting.

Also if you do use the menu to select the application you want to open with,
then there will be a problem if you are opening through an io-slave. The file
will be downloaded to a temporary local file and opened from there instead of
directly from the remote location. This is a big annoyance when working with
remote files using kate for instance, because you can't save changes directly
to the remote location, but has to save the file back to the temporary local
file, and then cut and paste it back to the remote server.
