You have a /usr/lib/aolserver4/Makefile.global file which has this in it: LIBS += -L/usr/lib -ltcl8.4 -ldl -lpthread -lieee -lm -lz -lgcc_s Your Depends line says: Depends: aolserver4 (= 4.0.9-1), libc6-dev, tcl8.4-dev (>= 8.4.1-2) Either you should remove the -lz from that, or add a dependency on zlib1g-dev.
