Roland, No worries :). It _is_ confusing. I'd like users to have the option of using a Debian kernel image or their own kernel, so I've intentionally made the "Depends:" pretty loose, relying on "Recommends:" instead.
Not being a user of aptitude, I hadn't seen the behavior you described. Was this just a fluke, or something I can adjust in the package to improve it?
