Salut,

Nobody knows when the release will happen. We hope it will happen
"soon", but I cannot promise anything about that. However, if you were
talking about the new scheme for .cfg files, it is already implemented
in packages for the soon-to-be-released teTeX 3 that Frank Küster
uploaded to experimental recently (some of the packages may still be in
the NEW queue). And there is an lmodern experimental package on
http://people.via.ecp.fr/~flo/tmp/tetex-beta/lmodern/ that can be used
with them, but be warned that it doesn't handle upgrades from other
versions; it is only meant to validate the new scheme.

I think so.

Well, if you can convince an ftp-master, I may change my mind. But your
last argument doesn't hold: currently, Debian has roughly 10000
packages. If every package would be suddenly split in two parts like
this, we wouldn't get to (roughly) 10001 packages, but 20000, which
would cause considerable problems with the current state of our tools.

IMHO, you should really make what is necessary to be able to use PFB
files directly in lout. On-the-fly conversion is quite fast, and as such
is probably an option.

Also, you said that the 2 Mbytes of TFM files you don't need in lmodern
are too much for you, but you didn't mention that adding the PFA
versions of all shipped PFB files would take 4 additional Mbytes of your
precious disk space. Yes, twice as much as "too much"!

FYI, the average size of the PFB files shipped in lmodern is
73642 bytes, while the average size of the corresponding PFA files
(obtained with t1ascii) is 143295 bytes. Twice as much, again. It is
understandable that upstream doesn't ship them. :-p
