I hit the same problem with kernel 2.6.10 unstable.
The problem didn't disappear even after applying the mentioned patch.
The file /etc/X11/xkb/types/basic is looking exactly the same as the patched one.
Do you have any other suggestions how to resolve it?
I could also provide the snapshot of installed files related to gnome. They are upgraded along with current unstable branch.
