the problem occurs when the Lookup Blogs buttons has never been pressed.
a workaround with current version is to get the list using the Lookup
button. 

very similar xmlrpclib errors take place when the url, username or
password are not set. the attached patch fixes both.

at least two other silent failures can still occur: when the machine is
offline or when the url is malformed. adding exception to the
xmlrpclib.Server to catch them would be nicer!
