Yes it can. It depends on the libx11-6 package, not the X server, and if the $DISPLAY environment variable is not set, it will not try to open an X window. If you are using cacaview over a terminal connection and your $DISPLAY variable is set, then fix it. Otherwise you can set the $CACA_DRIVER environment variable to "slang".
