Starting on December 8 I noticed that I can't log into my msn passport
account with pidgin anymore. Pidgin says that our protocol is not
supported by the server. Microsoft released an update to their servers
which changed the which changed their response to protocol support
queries. The bug was referred to by the people at the ubuntu camp here:

I think the version of pidgin must be updated to atleast pidgin 2.5 as
outlined at the bottom of the pidgin developer ticket:
