when clicked on, seemingly do nothing. Only after I closed the browser
did I realise that the link targets were downloaded to my desktop, but I
wasn't given the opportunity to view them before or after this happened.

the default behavior is to automatically download files to a preset
directory. you can deselect the "Automatically download and open
files" option in the Edit -> Preferences -> General dialog if you
don't like this behavior.
