CONFIG_DEBUG_KERNEL=y
CONFIG_MAGIC_SYSRQ=y
# CONFIG_SCHEDSTATS is not set
# CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB is not set
# CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK is not set
# CONFIG_DEBUG_SPINLOCK_SLEEP is not set
# CONFIG_DEBUG_KOBJECT is not set
# CONFIG_DEBUG_HIGHMEM is not set
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO=y
# CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER is not set
CONFIG_EARLY_PRINTK=y

I built that using "make-kpkg"

make-kpkg clean
CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=4 MAKEFLAGS="CC=gcc-3.4" make-kpkg --revision=20050217
kernel_image

Does make-kpkg strip the kernel in some way? Or am I doing something
profoundly wrong?

        No.

> Or am I doing something profoundly wrong?

        This is hard to tell. kernel-package essentially arrranges for
 the following commands to be called:

        $(MAKE) $(do_parallel) $(EXTRAV_ARG) $(FLAV_ARG) ARCH=$(KERNEL_ARCH) \
                            $(CROSS_ARG) $(target)
        $(MAKE) $(do_parallel) $(EXTRAV_ARG) $(FLAV_ARG) ARCH=$(KERNEL_ARCH) \
                            $(CROSS_ARG) modules

        do_parallel expands to -jN, or nothing;
        EXTRAV_ARG expands to nothing,
        FLAV_ARG expands to nothing,
        ARCH=$(KERNEL_ARCH) expands to ARCH=i386, or something,
        CROSS_ARG expands to nothing,
        and target expands to bzImage, or the like

        So, in essence, you ran
     make ARCH=i386  bzImage
     make ARCH=i386  modules

        If you think there is something funny going on, set the env
 var CLEAN_SOURCE to NO, recompile, and examine the vmlinuz produced
 in the top level directory with the one installed in the kernel image
 package. There shall be no differences (if there are, please log the
 build and file another bug report).

        As it is, I am closing this report, since I think this is a
 local issue.
