LVM creates devices under /dev. You first create a Physical Group on an existing /dev/ide/.. device (or sda, md, etc). Then you create a Volume Group, based on one of more Physical Groups. This Volume Group foo is created as /dev/foo. Then you create Logical Groups (the actualy partitions you then format as ext3, etc), and they are created as /dev/foo/bar.
