Thanks to Rasmus Abrahamsen who gave me remote access to his
SheevaPlug, I have identified and fixed the issue today (bug #787563).
I believe an update to Debian 8 with a new installer is planned for
this weekend.

In the meantime, you can also use this workaround.  Run the installer
until you hit the partitioner.  Go back and open a shell in the
installer menu.
Type:
  echo 'echo armel/kirkwood' > /bin/archdetect
Go back to the insaller (Ctrl-D or exit) and continue with the
installation.
