I suggest that you try with another standard serial connector, until you find a suitable one. Following instructions, it's a standard serial PC cable, but I have had to test three different cables on my SS4000-E to find one suitable enough. With the first two, I only get garbage in minicom, exactly like you describe. Finaly, all was good with the tird. Once you'll resolve the serial console problem, you can try to install Debian by loading the installer by tftp if the .pkg doesn't work.
