We use Outlook 2007/2010/2013, roundcube, squirrelmail and Thunderbird; also a bit of a random collection on the BYOD front. I'm afraid I don't know how each client handles the "references" header. I've had it pointed out to me that this header is mangled in the test file I sent Paul.
