Kell, What version are you running, 1.2.x, 2.0.1, cvs-snapshot. Are you using mysql or postgres. What insertion route are you using (lmtp or dbmail-smtp). Can you provide a TRACE_LEVEL=5 trace of both insertion and retrieval of such a corrupted message?
